Lee Iacocca

At Chrysler, Iacocca's Jeep role centered on business timing, including delaying Grand Cherokee while minivans took priority—not driving the launch stunt.

“Jeep's version of Iacocca's story is not his Mustang-era story — do not assume the reputation carries over unexamined.”

Chrysler's most recognizable executive

By the early 1990s, Iacocca was already famous for the Mustang program and the Chrysler federal bailout — a public face that makes any dramatic Chrysler moment gravitate toward his name in casual memory, whether or not he was actually there.

A scheduling decision, not a driving stunt

As CEO, Iacocca reportedly delayed the Grand Cherokee's release to late 1992 so Chrysler could prioritize its minivan redesign — a business-prioritization call. The famous "executive drove the new Jeep through a plate-glass window" launch stunt at the January 1992 Detroit auto show is popularly misremembered as Iacocca, but the driver was Chrysler president Bob Lutz, with Detroit Mayor Coleman Young in the passenger seat — see Lutz's page.
