Military lineage
WWII MB / GPW
Mechanically interchangeable, historically not — check what actually matches
- Frame crossmember shape
- The simplest field test: the front frame crossmember under the radiator is square on a Ford GPW and round on a Willys MB. Bodies, engines, and frames were swapped between the two — often by the military itself, especially after the war — so a "GPW" can easily be sitting on an MB frame or vice versa.
- Matching stampings, not just matching parts
- Willys and Ford used separate, non-interchangeable stamp systems. Restorers and MVPA (Military Vehicle Preservation Association) show judges examine stampings closely; mixed stamps from the two makers on one component is a restoration error that is immediately visible to a knowledgeable buyer or judge — a "frankenjeep" assembled from both makers' parts is common and not inherently a problem, but it should be sold and priced as what it is.
- Two serial numbers that can disagree
- The chassis frame-rail serial and the firewall plate carry the same number from the factory; a separate body-tub stamp lives in the left toe-board gusset. On a genuine 80-year-old working vehicle these can disagree after a rebuild — see the /identification page for what that does and doesn't mean.
- Price range as a sanity check
- Reported market range runs from roughly $2,000 for a basket-case project to over $40,000 for a show-level restoration, with a careful shopper reportedly landing a solid driver around $19,500. Treat any single figure as a snapshot, not a valuation service — JeepFacts does not price vehicles.
Wrangler
YJ (1987–1995)
The square-headlight Wrangler — check the vacuum 4WD system and the frame
- Vacuum-disconnect 4WD engagement
- If the 4WD indicator light doesn't illuminate or engagement is inconsistent, suspect dry-rotted, cracked, or disconnected vacuum lines — a YJ-specific system, not the same design as later Wranglers.
- Leaf springs and bushings
- Inspect for sagging packs, broken leaves, cracked bushings, and rusted shackles. Wandering or hopping over bumps is a symptom, not just a ride-quality quirk.
- Manual-transmission slave cylinder
- The internal slave cylinder can leak hydraulic fluid into the transmission bell housing; replacement requires pulling the transmission, so a leak here is a real cost item, not a minor fix.
- Rust in the usual places
- Check rear leaf-spring mounts, frame rails, skid plates, rear crossmember, driver-side floorboard (lift the carpet), and roll-bar mounting points.
Wrangler
TJ (1997–2006)
Round headlights, coil springs — and the frame rots from the inside out
- Frame rust at the rear control-arm brackets
- This is the single most-cited TJ buying concern. The frame's center section has no drain holes, so water and debris sit inside and rust the frame from the inside out — invisible from outside until it fails. Forum guidance: bring a hammer, tap the frame near the control-arm mounts and low points beside the rear axle, and listen for a solid ring versus a dull thud. Surface rust on the outside is normal; anything soft or flaking from the inside is a walk-away sign, not a paint job.
- Oil Pump Drive Assembly (2005–2006 4.0L)
- Listen for a "laughing monkey" rattling noise on cold start, a known OPDA failure symptom on late 4.0L engines without a documented replacement.
- Steering and suspension slop
- Check the track bar, ball joints, tie-rod ends, steering stabilizer, and control-arm bushings — worn components here produce vague, wandering steering that's easy to mistake for "just how TJs drive."
- Radiator end-tank seams and transfer-case shift linkage
- Plastic radiator end tanks leak at the seams over time; the transfer-case Z-bar linkage's plastic bushings pop out, causing shifting trouble.
Wrangler
JK (2007–2018)
The four-door era — watch the oil filter housing and exhaust manifold bolts
- Cracked oil filter housing (2012+ Pentastar)
- A burning-oil smell or visible pooling beneath the intake manifold points to a cracked plastic oil filter housing on the 3.6L Pentastar V6.
- Exhaust manifold bolts
- Cold-start ticking on both the 3.8L and 3.6L engines is commonly the rear exhaust manifold bolts, which are "notorious for snapping."
- Ball joints and front axle C-gussets
- Jack the front axle and check for vertical wheel play. On lifted trucks running oversized tires, also check the axle C-gussets for bending and resulting uneven camber — a modification-driven wear pattern specific to this era's popularity as a lift/tire platform.
- Electrical and water intrusion
- Test airbag lights, steering-wheel controls, and fuel-pump operation; water intrusion is reported to accelerate electrical faults.
Wrangler
JL / JOL (2018–present)
Modern electronics need a modern checklist
- Auxiliary battery / Engine Stop-Start (ESS)
- ESS warnings and random electrical glitches often point to secondary/auxiliary battery failure in the stop-start system.
- Recall completion and steering feel
- Verify open recalls were actually completed, then test highway steering for vagueness or wandering and confirm the alignment is correct.
- Fuse box seating
- A quirky but real check: press down on every factory fuse — there is reportedly a good chance several will audibly click further into their sockets.
- Uconnect touchscreen and tailgate hinges
- Watch for screen delamination (bubbling, ghost touches, random menu changes) and for tailgate creaking/sagging, especially on trucks carrying an oversized spare without a reinforcement bracket. On 4xe hybrids, also check software-update history, charging behavior, and recall status specifically.
Cherokee
XJ (1984–2001)
Unibody means rust is structural, not cosmetic
- Rocker panels — check from underneath
- XJ rockers are a famous rust point because they rot from the inside out; a clean-looking outer rocker can hide serious inner corrosion. Look at the inside of the rocker from underneath the vehicle, not just the visible outer panel — visible rust on the inner rocker is a strong signal to look at a different vehicle.
- Floor pans and rear quarter panels
- Check floor pans beneath the seats and cargo area, and rear quarter panels around the wheel wells.
- Structural unibody mounting points
- Because the XJ has no separate frame, rust around control-arm and shock mounts is a structural-integrity question, not a trim question — this is the buying diligence the unibody design specifically demands.
- The only real fix
- Cutting out rusted metal and welding in new panels is described as the only permanent fix — cosmetic patches over structural rust are a red flag, not a solution.
Grand Cherokee
WJ / WK (1999–2010)
Cooling-system diligence matters more than on most Jeeps
- Heater-core coolant leaks
- A common WJ/WK complaint is coolant loss traced to a leaking heater core — look for odd smells from the dash A/C vents and a wet or moist passenger-side carpet, both symptomatic of this specific failure.
- Hoses, clamps, and radiator condition
- Inspect all cooling-system hoses for cuts or abrasion and tightness of connection; radiators can crack or corrode with age, especially on older examples.
- Airflow blockage at the radiator
- A surprisingly common overheating cause is simple airflow blockage — plastic bags, road debris, or heavy mud caking the radiator fins — worth a visual check before assuming a mechanical fault.
- Undercarriage rust in salt-belt examples
- As with most unibody-adjacent SUVs of this era, undercarriage rust is a real concern on vehicles from road-salt states and should be part of any pre-purchase inspection.
