François Castaing
A Renault Sport veteran widely credited as the father of XJ Cherokee, Castaing carried AMC's product-development culture and Grand Cherokee program into Chrysler.

Le Mans before Detroit
Born March 18, 1945; engineering degree from École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers, Paris. Started at Gordini (1968) on 24 Hours of Le Mans engine programs; became Renault Sport Technical Director once Renault absorbed Gordini.
Renault sends its engineer to Detroit
Renault owned 46% of AMC by 1980; Castaing and family relocated to Detroit that year, taking over AMC product engineering and development.
The Cherokee that defined modern Jeep
Widely credited as "the father of the Jeep Cherokee (XJ)" — the unibody compact SUV that defined Jeep's mainstream identity for over a decade. After the XJ, led AMC's early work on what became the Grand Cherokee.
The AMC brain trust moves to Chrysler
After the 1987 Chrysler-AMC deal, Castaing became Chrysler's VP of Vehicle Engineering, carrying the Grand Cherokee program to its 1992 launch while also serving as Engineering VP on the Dodge Viper team, "vital" to its V10 engine.
A quiet, honored finish
Elected to the US National Academy of Engineering (1995). Later led Chrysler Powertrain Operations (1994) and Chrysler International Operations (1996); became a technical adviser to CEO Bob Eaton after the 1998 Daimler merger, retiring in 2000. Died July 26, 2023.
