The generation that brought a back seat — and the mall
The JK's defining change wasn't mechanical, it was a body style: the factory four-door Wrangler Unlimited, on a wheelbase stretched from 95.4 in to 116 in, opened the model to families and daily drivers for the first time and quickly became the best-selling Wrangler configuration. One retrospective's framing sticks: this is the generation that "brought off-roading to the masses — and the mall."
United States market, both body styles (2-door and 4-door Unlimited). Model-year running changes noted where sourced.

Trims and transmissions
Transmissions split cleanly around the 2012 engine change: the NSG370 6-speed manual (rated north of 1,100 lb-ft of input torque) was the sole manual across the whole JK run, while the automatic changed from the 42RLE 4-speed (paired only with the 3.8L, 2007–2011) to the WA580 5-speed (paired with the 3.6L Pentastar from 2012, with a notably shorter 3.59 first gear). The Pentastar's 41% torque-and-power jump over the 3.8L is widely described as transforming the JK's on-road driving experience.

Identification and ownership notes
JKs fall entirely within the standardized 17-character VIN era (see /decode/vin). The two model-defining ownership checks split by era: pre-2012 cars pair with the 3.8L's known reliability reputation, while 2012+ Pentastar cars need a check for a cracked plastic oil filter housing (burning-oil smell or pooling beneath the intake manifold) — see /buyer-guide for the full JK inspection checklist, including the exhaust-manifold-bolt and front-axle-C-gusset checks that apply across both engine eras.
